Leading on Extreme Weather Planning – Feedback Sought

Ending homelessness and ensuring a quality homeless and human service system –  from street outreach to accessible and affordable housing options – has long been a priority for me. This work includes making sure the City of Chicago has adequate cooling and warming centers during times of extreme weather, which are both common and predictable during Chicago’s winters and summers. We are alarmed at the current inadequacies of the City’s extreme weather planning, often resulting in too few cooling and warming centers and none available in the late evenings or overnight. Our team is proud to collaborate with advocates, street outreach workers, street medicine doctors, and people with lived experience on this issue and we envision a City that takes care of everyone during extreme weather.
