SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Recently awarded a ‘100%’ rating from the Illinois Environmental Council (IEC), state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, D-Chicago, is working to support environmental sustainability through a series of impactful initiatives and upcoming local events.
In August, LaPointe hosted an Environmental Town Hall in collaboration with the IEC, which has recognized LaPointe with a 100% scorecard in each one of the legislative years she’s represented the 19th District. Speakers included The Nature Conservancy and the Sierra Club to discuss some of the community’s most pressing environmental issues — most notably flooding and wetland management, which devastated parts of Chicago’s Northwest Side neighborhoods last summer.
LaPointe’s Environmental Advisory Council is another vital pillar of the community’s environmental strategy, composed of neighbors and local professionals who share a passion for environmental causes. The council, which has been steadily growing, works to address barriers to information regarding environmental policy, share critical resources, and advocate for solutions to hyperlocal challenges.
“I’m lucky to represent a district eager to be involved in ‘kitchen table’ conversations about how we can make our neighborhoods more sustainable. These local initiatives are a testament to a community that is deeply invested in the well-being of its natural surroundings and promoting sustainable living here on the North West side.”
In tandem with these efforts, LaPointe and other elected officials will co-host the Fall Nature Fest, led by Cook County Commissioner Bridget Degnen. This environmentally focused festival will bring together over 60 sustainable small businesses and eco-friendly organizations on Saturday, September 14, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at LaBagh Woods.
Plus, LaPointe remains deeply committed to hyperlocal environmental initiatives. Recent efforts in the Dunning-Read Conservation Area include a monthly workday where volunteers can help keep trails maintained, remove invasive species, and ensure that the area’s green spaces remain clean and welcoming to the community. The next workday is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, and is regularly held on the third Saturday of each month.
Similarly, the ongoing gardening series at the Jefferson Park Pollinator Garden allows residents to contribute to the local ecosystem. Throughout the summer, neighbors and other participants teamed up to pick up trash, do weeding, and plant native species to support pollinators during the park’s gardening days.
