CHICAGO – State Rep. Lindsey LaPointe (D-Chicago), a strong advocate for increased resources for local schools and improved classrooms for future generations, visited several far Northwest side students and faculty members to learn more about how to propel local schools forward.
“The people closest to our schools — students, parents and teachers — know better than anyone what’s working in and around the classroom and what’s not,” said LaPointe. “If we fail to listen to people’s real stories and experiences, we’re missing the full picture as to what we can do as lawmakers to ensure local schools thrive and students have what they need to be their best.”
LaPointe visited Wright College to engage with members of the Addiction Studies Student Advisory Council and hear firsthand from faculty, students, and stakeholders about the biggest challenges and successes the program has faced in recent years, and more expansively, discuss long-term solutions that address Illinois’ behavioral healthcare workforce shortage. As Chair of the Mental Health and Addiction Committee, LaPointe remains committed to advancing legislation that uplifts Illinois’ behavioral healthcare providers, which includes reducing licensing barriers and expanding student loan repayment options. With a focus on the challenges students face when entering the workforce, LaPointe will provide updates on pending legislation designed to strengthen the behavioral health system across the state.
As a follow up to their roundtable with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) principals, Rep. LaPointe and Sen. Martwick will continue discussions with education advocates by meeting with Local School Council (LSC) members to gain insights into budget challenges, curriculum demands, and ways to improve collaboration between parents, residents, and school staff ahead of the budgetary process.
“These conversations are critical to identify the on-the-ground needs of our far Northwest side teachers and students,” said LaPointe. “I look forward to taking this insight back to Springfield, as my colleagues and I fight to pass legislation that puts our students first.”
